The Sanctuary of Demeter Chamyne is located 150 meters east of the ancient stadium.The Sanctuary was discovered in 2006 during water supply works. The excavations brought also to light a rectangular building and many numerous finds.
The finds like female terracotta figurines, terracotta figurines of cows, bulls, piglets, protomes, large scale terracotta figurines, miniature vases, thymiateria, cooking pots and more are common finds in other Demeter’s shrines.
Chamyne was a prehistoric divinity associated with the vegetation and the fecundity of the earth. Her surname is formed by “χαμαί+ευνή”,which means lying or sleeping on the earth. Later on, Demeter took the same surname and was renamed “Demeter Chamyne”.
